The Veterinary Corner: The Premie Foal
Mares are pregnant for 340 days (about 11 months). Foals born before day 320 are considered to be premature, but that does not mean the foal cannot still be dysmature. In reality the 340-day mark is just a suggestion to most mares, and those of you who own mares can probably relate to that! Some mares will choose to hold their pregnancy for much longer, sometimes even over a year. When mares do this, it is because they know what is best. As mares are bred beyond maidenhood (a maiden is a first-time mom), it is easier to know what their “normal” gestation is. Mares are usually consistent unless there is a concern with the pregnancy. It is extremely rare that a mare would be induced to deliver if she passed her due date. So, what usually causes a premature delivery?
